Counseling & Psychology in Malaysia
Sometimes, children experience stress, psychological disorders and mental health symptoms that can affect their overall well-being and ability to function in a healthy, productive manner. When these symptoms become too much for a child to cope with, he and his family might consult a child psychologist, sometimes in a hospital setting. A child psychologist provides children with in- or outpatient services in a hospital for a number of reasons, such as when they need help coping with a medical condition or require treatment for depression or anxiety.
Performing Assessments
Before a child can receive treatment for her symptoms, a child psychologist meets with the child and her family to discuss the presenting problem, or the reason for seeking treatment. A psychologist will usually meet with the child and her parents together first. Then she will meet individually with the child and then the parents to gather background information, perform observations of behavior and other symptoms, and talk about problems in the child's life. The presenting problem might involve a variety of issues, such as dealing with medical conditions, mental health disorders like depression, learning disabilities or family issues. The process of gathering information is known as a psychological assessment. At the end of the assessment, the psychologist might provide a diagnosis and suggest a course of treatment.
